Better Off Fred is the second half of the fifty-fifth episode of Big Hero 6: The Series. It premiered on October 26, 2020 and is the second segment of the fifth episode of Season 3 alongside "Cobra and Mongoose".
Synopsis[]
Fred meets the girl of his dreams, Olivia, only to be rejected by her for reasons he doesn't understand.
Plot[]
At Lucky Cat Café, Hiro, Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Go Go, Baymax and Mini-Max eat Aunt Cass' new cupcakes when suddenly Fred enters in a depressed mood. He explains to them that he was in the middle of "an important research" (that was simply buying comic books), when he met a girl who liked the same comic he wanted to buy. Fred asked her out to a charity event sponsored by his family, but Olivia immediately rejected him upon hearing he was a Frederickson. Before telling his friends that he found out Olivia's last name is Mole, Richardson Mole appears from behind them to say the same thing, telling the team that he had been at the café for some time now because the security cameras from his comic book store recorded Fred's encounter with Olivia and wanted to mock him for it. Yet, Fred doesn't care and says he deserves being mocked, and that his life has no meaning now; Richardson, seeing how depressed Fred has become, offers to help him, claiming that he can make Fred the perfect man for Olivia like her former boyfriend Javert supposedly because he doesn't want Olivia to destroy Fred since "that's his job". Although everyone advices Fred not to trust Richardson, he still agrees due to how desperate he is—and so Richardson gives Fred a makeover to make him appear fancier and using a fake persona dubbed "Frederique".
At the Annual Save The Sloths Benefit fundraiser event, Fred's friends appear in formal wear while they wait for him, hoping that he did not actually go through with Richardson's plan—but then see Frederique arrive. Honey Lemon tries to tell him that he shouldn't have to pretend being someone else to be liked, but Fred ignores her and enters the building where he sees Olivia and tries talking to her again with his new personality. Regardless, Olivia rejects him again and is creeped out by his behavior, causing Fred to become sad again. It is then that Richardson starts laughing at Fred, revealing that Olivia and Javert only went on a single date and she hated him—and he made Fred act the same way simply to humiliate him even more, going as far as paying Bluff Dunder a lot of money only so he would make a live report about it.
Olivia overhears everything and feels bad about it—then suddenly Supersonic Stu crashes the event because it's his "first solo heist", although Supersonic Sue still accompanies him. Richardson hides inside a piano upon seeing him, Hiro calls Skymax, and Big Hero 6 (except Fred) silently retreat while Stu steals the attendants' valuables. Sue reminds him to take a hostage so that no one will try to stop him, and Stu grabs Olivia. Fred tells him to let her go and the rest of Big Hero 6 return with their suits on, so Sue starts to fight the armored team even though Stu wanted to do the robbing all alone. Meanwhile Fred references a specific page from Duck Duck Moose to Olivia, who understands exactly what he means and realizes he is about to make a dangerous move—Fred then swings from one of the event's banner decorations and kicks Stu while Olivia ducks, and his heroic act makes Olivia fall in love with him. The police arrive soon but the Supersonics escape, with Sue telling Stu that even though his first heist failed, the attempt is what matters.
Fred then confesses to Olivia that he only acted as Frederique because he wanted her to like him, to which Olivia responds that the only reason she didn't like him initially is because Richardson told her he was a jerk, but after seeing how he saved her, realized Richardson was wrong and should have trusted her own instincts. Fred invites her to watch "Super Tall Fire-Breathing Hurricane Centaur" and Olivia accepts. The couple leaves while Big Hero 6 watch them with Honey Lemon saying they are cute, then leave the place themselves and turn the lights off.
Yet, Richardson is still trapped inside the piano, unaware that everyone else has already left.

Trivia[]
- The episode title is a play on "better off dead".
- The summary listed in TV guides "Fred meets the girls of his dreams, only to be rejected by her." erroneously using the plural "girls".
- Richardson taking a sip from a soda when he gives Fred his makeover is a reused frame from the Season 1 episode "Big Hero 7".
- The comic titled "Duck Duck Moose" is a nod to the children's game Duck Duck Goose.
- In the background of the comic book store there is a comic called "Incredibly Buff", which is a parody/reference to Marvel's The Incredible Hulk franchise.
- The name of Olivia's first date, Javert, is a reference to a character from the French novel Les Misérables.
- Richardson seems to be afraid of the Supersonics due to the events of "Mayor for a Day".
Errors[]
- Richardson hides inside the piano when Supersonic Stu enters; when Fred and Olivia talk after Stu is gone, the piano is open in the background, but when everyone else leaves, it's closed again with Richardson still inside.
