Communication Breakdown[]
At night in Downtown San Fransokyo, Big Hero 6 chase a thief in ninja outfit who had just stolen a bag full of jewelry. The thief gives his assistant the bag and tells him to get to their van while he distracts the heroes. They attempt to use some of Fred's "combo strikes", but become confused due to the complicated names and instead hit each other. Go Go tries charging at the thief, but he mysteriously disappears.
Wasabi's visor is accidentally dropped, but he is helped by a woman passing by, who turns out to be Professor Kameela from SFIT, so Wasabi panics when she sees him without the visor as he runs away. Next day, the heroes agree to practice their combo moves at Frd's room while also trying to learn how the thief managed to vanish. Fred and Mini-Max record the practice so that they can upload them into Baymax and remember them when needed, but Wasabi is still concerned about Professor Kameela possibly discovering their identities, especially since Wasabi wants to join her Baryonic Dark Matter Research Team at SFIT. On the other hand, Hiro finally realizes the ninja thief must be a holographic projection because he showed no signs of life or being a robot—as well as the fact that a lecture about a new, advanced hologram technology would be presented that same night at SFIT where they could learn more. The team agree to go except for Fred and Mini-Max, who would stay at home to edit their training videos.
That night at the SFIT auditorium, Wasabi seems to finally have calmed down—until Professor Kameela sits right beside him and the others. The presentation starts with Professor Granville on stage holding a phone while Alex Miromoto, the developer of the hologram technology, begins his speech about how his technology will allow people to be in different places at once. He shakes Professor Granville's hand to reveal he is actually a hologram and isn't physically onstage, and with this, the team figure out he is indeed the ninja thief they met before, even seeing he is wearing an expensive watch. Kameela starts asking Wasabi about his whereabouts the previous day, so he starts panicking again and tells his friends she already knows their identities, saying they cannot leave to suit up because then she will definitely confirm it.
It is then that Hiro gets an idea and calls Fred, asking him to play one of their training videos on Baymax, while Hiro himself puts the video on Miromoto's app network so that it will play like an hologram in Granville's phone—thus having their alter-egos appear as if they were there to arrest Miromoto and at the same time end Kameela's suspicions. Miromoto becomes worried when he sees the team and confesses his crime, trying to justify himself by saying it was just an experiment and wouldn't keep any of the things he stole, but the holographic team begin their combo attack, causing Miromoto's hologram to vanish as the real one enters from backstage, but he is hit with Honey Lemon's chem-balls and knocked out. The police arrive after being called by an anonymous tip, arresting Miromoto and his assistant upon confirming their appearances match the description from the jeweler they stole from. Granville is forced to cancel the event due to the "unforeseen circumstances", so the team and everyone else start to leave.
Wasabi is relieved as he can finally prove to Kameela he wasn't anywhere suspicious, but it's quickly revealed that Kameela never knew about his superhero identity; instead, she believed that Wasabi was already in Professor Halloway's Research Team and was simply looking for him as she wanted to let him know he cannot be picked for her own research team since he is already in one. Wasabi clears things up by saying that he isn't actually in Halloway's team, in fact because he wanted to join Kameela's team, and so Kameela quips about how both failed to communicate while at the same time welcoming him to her research team.
