The Giri Industrial Corporation, or simply Giri, is a Japanese organization that oversees Big Hero 6 in Marvel Comics.
Background[]
After World War II, the Japanese government had forsworn the use of nuclear weapons but soon realized they still needed a way to defend themselves. Inspired by the fact that other countries of the world already had their own superhero teams such as The Avengers and Fantastic Four in the U.S. and Alpha Flight in Canada, the Japanese government wanted their own team of state-sanctioned superheroes at their disposal. As such, a top-secret consortium of Japanese politicians and business entities formed the Giri Industrial Corporation in order to recruit and train potential superhuman operatives.
Their headquarters are a building without an address, located somewhere in Tokyo. Hiro described this building as "eclectic" as it could be perceived as both an office building or a temple.
History[]
One of the Giri's members, the Homeland Security agent Furi Wamu, founded the superhero team called "Big Hero 6". Silver Samurai was appointed as the field commander of the team, despite reservations by some members of the Giri due to the fact Silver Samurai was a former supervillain. Secret agent Aiko Miyazaki was also recruited for the team under her own codename Honey Lemon, and the tough-talking Leiko Tanaka was released from prison on the condition that she serve on the team, being granted the Go-Go Tomago suit of armor. The Machiavellian bureaucrat known only as Mr. Oshima was appointed as the Giri's spokesperson and coordinated Big Hero 6's activities.
The Giri soon turned their attention to one of Japan's first superheroes: Sunfire, but at the time of Big Hero 6's formation, he was believed to be dead, and so they sought to recruit the young super-genius Hiro Takachiho and his robotic creation, Baymax—although both initially refused. It soon came to light that Sunfire lived, but appeared to be in a deadly condition, so he was brought to the Giri Office by Honey Lemon, Go-Go and Silver Samurai to be monitored. Not long after, Hiro and Baymax broke into the Giri HQ but after the duo was overwhelmed, they explained that they did this because a supervillain known as Everwraith had kidnapped Hiro's mother and were told to bring Sunfire to him if they wanted her alive, prompting Hiro and Baymax to join forces with Big Hero 6 to defeat Everwraith.
After this, Hiro and Baymax changed their minds and officially joined Big Hero 6; the Giri appointed the team's secret base at the Cool World Amusement Park in Osaka—until it was destroyed by X the Unknowable. The team was then moved to the Six Building—but they eventually relocated once more to the Giri Institute.
Giri later aided Big Hero 6 when the villain Everwraith returned upon joining forces with Doctor Octopus. Once the fight ended, Mr. Oshima called in the Giri's Yokai Containment Unit to imprison Everwraith.
