This page is for Hiro Takachiho, the character from Marvel Comics. For the character from the Disney film franchise, see Hiro Hamada.
It doesn't matter that this all happened before we were born -- the responsibility is ours to bear... the world still ours to protect.

Hiro Takachiho is a young super-genius who is the current leader of the Big Hero 6 team and creator of Baymax, his personal shape-shifting robot bodyguard.

Background[]

Born to wealthy industrialist Tomeo Takachiho and Maemi Takachiho, Hiro was raised in the affluent Tokyo suburb of Yōga, City of Setagaya. His parents noticed his intellectual brilliance at an early age, and he was placed in pre-school at age 2. Around age 6, Hiro was capable of constructing his own holograms, but eventually got bored of it[1]. At age 8, he began studying the English language[2]. Eventually, Hiro was recognized as one of the world's most brilliant child prodigies and was accepted into the prestigious private Tesuka Advanced Science Institute.

It was at the Tesuka Institute that young Hiro's proficiency for invention and innovation was discovered. He created his first and greatest invention to date, the robotic synthformer known as Monster Baymax, as a project for the Institute's science fair. However, prior to the project's completion, Hiro's father died and the young inventor programmed Baymax's artificial intelligence using the brain engrams of his recently departed father. With the thoughts and emotions of Hiro's father, Baymax became much more than a robotic bodyguard.

Personality[]

Hiro is a brilliant child prodigy, proficient in many fields of science and technology, with a focus on biology, physics and robotics.

However, he is still young, so he must deal with the transition from child to adult as he grows up, from experiencing depression to learning how he can cooperate with others. Hiro is overall heroic and possesses a sense of integrity. He greatly cares about his parents, as the death of his father was what motivated him to build Baymax to have a father figure. At times however, Hiro feels isolated from others because of his intellect, making it difficult to communicate with other children from his age. Hiro idolizes Sunfire and has a crush on Honey Lemon.

Appearance[]

During his early appearances, Hiro was typically seen with a bowl haircut, plain t-shirts and jeans, but in the 2008 comic series, he sports an anime-styled haircut (inspired by Samurai Champloo's Mugen),[3] a Yomiuri Giants tee, jacket and Sketchers-type shoes.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Genius-Level Intellect: Although he is only an adolescent, he is a visionary theoretician and accomplished machinesmith who has already made several breakthroughs in fields such as robotics, computer science, synthetic polymers, geology, biology and communications. He is also a gifted tactician and strategist. Hiro is an excellent engineer and mechanic, having invented a number of different tools and robots (including Baymax) and is capable of fixing almost any, if not all machinery. He is self-educated in multiple scientific fields.

Equipment[]

  • Core Cyber Network (CCN): Hiro's CCN is a mobile personal area computer network used for communication among his various mechanical devices. The CCN is also connected to many of his inventions. Hiro can also summon Baymax since the robot is directly linked to the CCN.
  • Bio-Atomic Parcel Detector (B-APD): This device is capable of pinpointing human-sized nuclear reactors.
  • EMP Gun: Hiro created an electro-magnetic pulse gun to break into the Giri HQ.
  • Flight Suit: It is a jet-pack-propelling suit that grants him limited firepower capablities; used when he first met Alpha Flight and chased X the Unknowable.
  • Electric Gloves: When he was brainwashed into attacking Alpha Flight, Hiro used a pair of blue electric gloves to fight them.
  • Virtual Reality Projector: A holographic projector that can produce a comprehensive recreation of past events based on information from various data streams.
  • Battle Suit: Hiro later used an armored suit equipped with a variety of tools. The suit was not actually built by him, as he mentions he got a rumor that its design was from Reed Richards.
  • Cyber-Glasses: Hiro's glasses have a cybernetic video display that can connect to an assortment of computer networks. Whatever Hiro sees and hears with the glasses can also be uploaded into Baymax's databanks.

History[]

At age 13, Hiro mourns upon learning that his hero Sunfire has recently died, but prepares to continue with his daily life and attend school the following day. Meanwhile, at the Giri Corporation headquarters, Hiro is enlisted as a potential recruit for Japan's newly-formed superhero team, the Big Hero 6, for his genius intellect. Mr. Oshima sends the team's initial leader, Silver Samurai to approach Hiro's mother Maemi for permission to have her son join the team, although she says no.

Baymax drives Hiro to the Tesuka Advanced Science Institute. Hiro arrives and jokes with his friends, but one of them notices that a strange girl is looking at Hiro from afar. Hiro turns his attention to her and immediately falls in love, but as he is distracted, he accidentally walks into a door and is then unable to talk with her since the students walk to class. During science class, Hiro gives a highly detailed report about why Sunfire shouldn't be held responsible for his powers going out of control before his presumed death, but his explanation is far too advanced even for his teacher, who also tells him that the Superintendent is looking for him.

Silver Samurai then approaches Hiro directly at the Superintendent's office while in his civilian attire, though the boy gets a bad first impression as he believes the Superintendent was harmed, calling Baymax to assist him. Silver Samurai however explains that she is safe, and transforms into his more recognizable Samurai appearance to tell him about Big Hero 6, offering Hiro to join. Regardless, Hiro also refuses to participate and goes back to class while feeling upset that his time was wasted. When Harada returns to Mr. Oshima, the latter tells him that Hiro joining is crucial for the team to succeed, and urges him to find another method to convince him.

At night, Hiro tells his mother about his conversation with Silver Samurai, and she reveals to him how it is her and his deceased father's desire for him to live a normal life and enjoy his youth while he can. His mother leaves after kissing Hiro goodnight, but some minutes later, an alarm comes from his Bio-Atomic Parcel Detector, and, although Baymax argues that his device is considered "impossible" to work, Hiro proves him otherwise as he just received a signal that Sunfire is alive and back in Japan. The duo sneaks out and goes to the Quonon Province—where Sunfire has been detected in an abandoned ancient monastery. They enter the temple, and Hiro becomes excited when he sees that Sunfire is indeed alive, although the mood quickly shifts when Sunfire tells him he didn't want to be found and he is still dying, then revealing that half of his body has turned abnormally pitch-black.

Hiro becomes distressed, remembering his father's death and claiming he doesn't want to lose Sunfire as well. Sunfire urges them to leave, but a fight between him and Baymax ensues when Sunfire loses control of his flame powers, triggering Baymax's defense programming to respond and attack as well. The trio is interrupted when Silver Samurai, Go-Go Tomago and Honey Lemon arrive, and Hiro recognizes Honey Lemon as the woman he had seen at school before. Realizing they are supposed to be half of "Big Hero 6", he quickly deduces that the other three members were supposed to be Sunfire, Baymax, and himself. Silver Samurai says that they were simply keeping tabs on Hiro, but having found Sunfire, they have to bring him in because he is still wanted for the incident involving his power flares. Yet, despite his ill condition, Sunfire challenges the heroes and uses his flames with great accuracy, crystallizing the entire room while leaving everyone unharmed, as a warning for them to leave—but then becomes weakened and kneels down from the pain. Worried about Sunfire, Hiro suggests him to allow Big Hero 6 help finding a cure for him, but Sunfire tells him how he had been seeking one for months to no avail, having given up and being ready to die.

Ultimately, Sunfire is taken to the Giri HQ while Hiro and Baymax make their way back home, and Hiro expresses to Baymax how he feels disillusioned that his hero had lost all hope. At home, Hiro enters and sees that his mother has apparently been disintegrated while a strange being introduces himself as Everwraith, informing him that he knew Big Hero 6 had contacted him before and then blackmailing both by explaining that Maemi still lived and was simply teleported away, but she would die unless Sunfire was brought to him. This prompts Hiro and Baymax to storm the Giri HQ to hack their computer and search for information about Sunfire, but they are stopped by Big Hero 6. Hiro panics and begs for their help, although he is first taken to another room until he calms down. With Baymax powered down after the robot had fought Silver Samurai, Hiro asks for a glass of water and tells the heroes that he must get his mother back even if it meant sacrificing Sunfire. Silver Samurai refuses, saying that Sunfire is far too ill to be of any help, but his only causes Hiro to become angered again, and powers Baymax back up with the glass of water to fight the heroes again.

Soon, Mr. Oshima intervenes and takes Hiro to a monitoring station so that he can talk with Sunfire. While waiting, Hiro reads Sunfire's body scans and notices that the black matter engulfing half of his body is a bio-kinetic charge that conflicted with his powers, but assumed this was part of the treatment given to him to keep him alive. Upon entering Sunfire's room, Hiro only sees him laying on his "deathbed" and refusing to help. At first, Hiro breaks down crying but quickly toughens up by saying he lived through his father's death, and Sunfire was being selfish—only worrying about himself. Hiro leaves the room and instead joins forces with Big Hero 6, then the 5-member team finds Everwraith over the streets of Tokyo, getting ready to fight him. Baymax initially tries to drag Hiro away from the fight because it's his priority to keep him safe, but Hiro reminds her that they have to save his mother, and so both stay. However, none of the heroes' powers appear to have any effect on Everwraith as he is an astral entity. Soon, Sunfire joins the fight in spite of his condition and learns that Everwraith wants to create an atomic explosion by siphoning his powers. While the team continues to try fighting Everwraith and save Sunfire, Baymax finds Maemi in a high building and climbs to rescue her. Hiro suggests that Sunfire releases his bio-kinetic charge to better control his powers, but this only confuses Sunfire. Hiro explains that he believed it was part of his treatment, but this enrages Sunfire as he finally realizes he had been deliberately misled by the people who told him it was the reason he was dying. Sunfire finally concentrates his atomic fire powers to defeat Everwraith, seemingly killing him and himself in the process while Honey Lemon pulled a Humvee from her Power Purse to drive everyone away to safety.

Later, Hiro and Big Hero 6 attend Sunfire's funeral, and Honey Lemon gives him a forehead kiss to comfort him. While everyone else leaves, Hiro decides to stay for longer and sees Sunfire coming back once again. He tells Hiro that he has to return to Canada discreetly to learn the truth about why he was told he was dying, and even though Hiro offers to help, Sunfire quietly refuses. Still, Hiro gives him a hug and tells him that no matter where he is, he would always be his friend and would be thinking about him.

After some time, Hiro is finally convinced to join Big Hero 6, and have their base established at the Cool World Amusement Park in Osaka. Eventually, Hiro also revealed to his teammates that he knew Sunfire survived. One day, the team is attacked by X the Unknowable, and Hiro decides it's best to call Sunfire for help. The superhero team Alpha Flight and Sunfire go to Japan and help defeat X, with Sunfire deciding to stay in Japan afterwards. With Sunfire back, the team clean the name of Silver Samurai's Clan Yashida and take down organized crime.

Sometime later, Crimson Cowl sent out supervillains to install weather modulators around the world and create meteorological disasters. In Tokyo, a blizzard was caused, so Hiro, Silver Samurai and Baymax helped by saving as many people as they could.

Hiro then continues to maintain a civilian life and attends classes at the Tesuka Advanced Science Institute, although his teachers and classmates are unaware that he moonlights as a secret agent.

Sunfire leaves Big Hero 6 to join the X-Corporation in India, while Silver Samurai returns to his villainous life after his leadership in Clan Yashida was stolen, so Hiro is appointed as the team's new field leader. With the incomplete team, they face a villain naming himself Deadline, who manages to take over Big Hero 6's base until Honey Lemon escapes through her Power Purse and returns with a young extra-dimensional princess called Lumina. They manage to beat Deadline with Lumina's help, so she joins the team under the name Sunpyre, honoring Sunfire's deceased sister who had used the same codename.

Hiro then increases their base's security and locks the device that Deadline created to try destroying Japan. Soon, they meet their new sixth member, Ebon Samurai, after Ebon tried to find Silver Samurai attempting to kill him. When Ebon finds out that Silver Samurai had apparently died, he decides to stay with Big Hero 6. The new incarnation of the team meet new members of Alpha Flight when they're brainwashed and controlled into going to Canada to attack them. After Alpha Flight help them break free from the mind control, they return to Japan and seek the people responsible for it.

Hiro and the team, as well as other Japanese superheroes, later appear in a conference announcing to work closely with the Japanese government, upon the end of the superhuman Civil War in the U.S.

The Big Hero 6 would see another shake-up when Sunpyre needed to go back to her homeworld to free it from villains that had taken over, while Ebon Samurai finds out that Silver Samurai lives and so he returns to his vengeance quest.

Big Hero 6 then recruits new member Wasabi No-Ginger and one day Hiro sees a mysterious crash in the coast of New York that he decides to investigate. His school is soon attacked by Gunsmith, Brute and Whiplash, with him unable to fight because otherwise his cover would be blown. He is almost frozen by Gunsmith, but is saved by Principal Miyazaki. Miyazaki and other students are saved by Honey Lemon, while the rest of Big Hero 6 fight the villains.

After the villains are beaten, Hiro has to go with the rest of the students while his teammates leave. Later that day, he uses a holographic recreation of the scene and notices that the attack was just a diversion for a robbery that took place in a nearby bank at the same time, then Furi Wamu hacks into Hiro's system and explains the situation.

Big Hero 6 and Furi are then sent to America while undercover to protect Dr. Iosama and his daughter, Marys, while Dr. Iosama researched an item that the villain trio were looking for. In New York, Big Hero 6 meet their last new member, Fred. Both Hiro and Marys develop interest on each other, but are interrupted when Big Hero 6 encounter Badgal and find that Furi Wamu, Dr. Iosama and Honey Lemon were possessed by Badgal and turned into her minions, which were the villains they faced in Japan.

After Badgal's defeat, the team helps fixing the spaceship that Hiro had found about before, but the team is stopped in the U.S. until Furi makes a deal with the authorities and are allowed to return to Japan.

They are later contacted by Spider-Man, Black Widow and Silver Sable, who announce that most of the world had turned against Spider-Man because Doctor Octopus deviced a plan to save the ozone layer that Spider-Man wanted to stop, since he knew it was actually another malevolent plan but the Avengers had been defeated by the Sinister Six and only they could help him now.

Big Hero 6 and other heroes of the world help him destroy Octopus' missiles and his Octobots in different parts of the planet, then later BH6 go back to Japan where another base was guarded by Everwraith after he had allied with Doc Ock. With the help of the Giri, Big Hero 6 defeat Everwraith again, capturing him and destroying the missile, then Spider-Man eventually defeats Octopus.
