Sofia is the third episode of Baymax!.
Synopsis[]
Middle-school student Sofia faces some major life changes with Baymax's unwavering support.
Plot[]
Baymax is at Shiro Yoshida Middle School, giving a presentation on how to properly apply various types of bandages to one of the school's health classes. Two of students within the class are Ali and Sofia, who're doing an elaborate yo-yo routine for their school's upcoming talent show and are very excited for it. But when Sofia goes to use the bathroom before she and Ali can get a little more practice in, she suddenly gets her first period and starts freaking out.
Baymax overhears Sofia panicking while cruising the halls and enters the bathroom to help her. Sofia explains the situation and it turns out that part of the reason she's upset is because the bathroom's dispenser containing all the period products (like pads and tampons) is empty and she doesn't have anything like that on her person at the moment. Obviously wanting to help her, Baymax leaves the bathroom to go get some period products for Sofia.
While at a nearby store, Baymax is surveying the wide variety of period products being offered and is obviously having a hard time deciding what to get for Sofia, so he asks a female customer for advice. While initially weirded out by Baymax, the woman (after seriously considered his question) ultimately suggests the tampons that she herself typically uses when she's on her period. Another woman chimes in with the suggestion of getting pads instead of tampons, admitting that she herself prefers pads because she finds them more comfortable than tampons. This leads to a bunch of other customers giving Baymax suggestions on what to get, such as:
- A trans man recommending the pads that he normally uses.
- A father recommending the period products that his daughter likes to use.
- A woman noting that pads might be best for Baymax's friend if she's on her first period.
Baymax soon returns to the bathroom that Sofia's holed herself up in, armed with a wide variety of products for her to choose from. Sofia eventually chooses a box of period pads, and after applying some, Ali soon arrives and reminds Sofia about the talent show. Having completely forgotten about it, Sofia explains her situation to her best friend. Ali tries his best to comfort Sofia, but she's still too embarrassed about what happened and refuses to leave the bathroom. After Ali leaves, Sofia confesses to Baymax that it's not that she doesn't want to compete in the talent show, but she's worried that (with finally starting her period) people will start treating her differently and she'll have to give up stuff that she loves since she's getting closer to adulthood. Hearing this, Baymax assures Sofia (who's only 12) that she doesn't have to give up the things she loves just because she has her period now -- while her body might change, she doesn't have to, and he ultimately encourages her to go through with the talent show.
In the end, Sofia (with newfound confidence) performs the yo-yo routine with Ali, which ends up really impressing the audience. Sofia and Ali end up hurting themselves doing a particularly elaborate move, but Baymax is there to help them and the two ultimately win the talent show.
In a post-credit scene, Baymax pretends to be asleep and plays with a yo-yo while Hiro works on his computer.

Trivia[]
- Shiro Yoshida Middle School is a reference to Sunfire, an original member of Marvel's Big Hero 6 (as well as a member of the X-Men).
- Sofia's implied to be Hispanic/Latina -- aside from her own name (which is common in Spanish-speaking countries and communities), Sofia mentions having an aunt named Mariana (whom Sofia refers to as "Tía Mariana"). Just like "Sofia," "Mariana" is a common name in Spanish-speaking countries/communities while "Tía" means "Aunt" in Spanish.
- Sofia's aunt has at least one child (making them Sofia's cousin), a daughter named Valerie. When Sofia's explaining to Baymax about why she's so worried about starting her period, she explains how, after Valerie had gotten her first period, Mariana wouldn't stop [Valerie] "mi mujercita" ("My little woman" in Spanish) for quite some time afterwards and how the rest of their family started treating Valerie differently after she got her first period.
- When Ali's trying to comfort Sofia in the bathroom, he mentions having a sister (who has already started her period) and claims that his sister told him that one of the benefits of getting your period is that you can sometimes use it as an excuse to get out of gym class. While Ali never says how old his sister is, she's most likely older than him and Sofia (especially if she's already started her period).
